Jake Niall of The Age won the 2014 Quill for Best Sports Feature in any Medium for his story ‘Inside the world of Liam Jurrah’.

Judges’ comment

Jake took the initiative to plan and carry off an interview with former Melbourne footballer Liam Jurrah while he was in Alice Springs jail for domestic violence offences, alongside his father, mother and other relatives. Jake’s sophisticated feature was set against the backdrop of Jurrah’s former club playing an ‘indigenous round’ match nearby and brought into focus an important issue confronting Australian society.
