Eddie Jim of The Sunday Age won the 2014 Quill for Best Features Photograph for his image of Hayden McLean, a severely autistic, mildly intellectually and disabled 35-year-old, who is highly sensitive to noise and unkindness.

Judges’ comments

The photographer has taken enormous time to gain the trust of the subject and capture the essence of the story in a very respectful manner. The result is a series of photographs that detailed the unique relationship between the carer and Hayden.

Darrian Traynor from Getty Images was highly commended in this category for his photo of Pakistani international student Farrukh Salah-Ud-Din, ‘King’ Farrukh, in the backyard of his Preston home.
