2014 Quills: Best News Photograph

Wayne Ludbey has won the 2014 Quill for Best News Photograph for his picture of jockey Paul Hamblin, who survived unscathed after falling from his horse at Sandown Races.

Judges’ comments

Wayne has captured a classic news picture. It is hard to stop looking at this amazing image and wonder how the jockey was not badly injured. The sharpness and clarity are first-class and continue to draw you into the image.

Highly Commended

Jay Town was highly commended in this category for his photo of a herd of deer trapped by bushfire near Riddells Creek. (The deer were given an escape route by a water-bombing helicopter which arrived soon after the photo was taken.)
