The Melbourne Press Club is pleased to open applications for the 2024/25 Michael Gordon Fellowships program.

Named in honour of the late former political editor of The Age, the fellowship provides grants to fund reporting projects specialising in social justice, Indigenous affairs, migration, human rights, international development and public interest journalism.

Previous recipients of a Gordon Fellowship have gone on to create impactful award-winning reporting covering a broad range of issues which wouldn’t have been covered adequately without financial support from the grant.

Our 2023/24 Fellows have published inspiring and important work: the Australian Associated Press reporter Luke Costin and photojournalist Mick Tsikas covered the Solomon Islands’ pivotal election earlier this year with their coverage syndicated across Australia.

And recently, The Age’s Charlotte Grieve and Simone Fox Koob published their investigation into the carbon credits industry, revealing “…vested interests, bitter conflicts and allegations of predatory behaviour by some operators.’’ You can read the story here.

The Fellowship program is open to all journalists, photographers and videographers working in news organisations of any size and in any medium. We also welcome applications from freelance journalists and accomplished student journalists who have a commitment to having their work published by an outlet at the time of application.

We encourage applications from journalists who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, as well as journalists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

A flyer to distribute in newsrooms is available here.

Applications close on Friday October 25 at 5pm.
