Journalism No Crime

Australian journalist Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera English colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been jailed in Egypt in an outrageous assault on press freedom and the cornerstone of democracy: the right to free speech.

On Monday, 14 July, an event to support the three journalists was held at Federation Square in Melbourne. An image of them was displayed on Fed Square’s Big Screen and people attending were urged to photograph and tweet it as part of an ongoing social media campaign.

Melbourne Press Club president Michael Rowland and Victorian Secretary of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance Louise Connor made statements condemning the sentencing of the journalists, and a message from Peter Greste’s family was read.
