For two years in a row Victorian regional newspaper the Riverine Herald has won the Quill Award for outstanding regional and rural journalism.

Both awards highlighted the tenacious journalism of a small newsroom team in Echuca on the Murray River.

The 2018 Quill recognised a 69-day campaign that forced the State Government to honour a broken promise to build a specialist school in the town.

Deputy Editor Tyla Harrington said the campaign demonstrated the important role of regional journalism in fighting for the needs of small communities.

“If you hold up a mirror to the community, that should be the paper - the paper should reflect its community,” she said.
