Back in the Game: Covering Footy During COVID-19

A webinar with Alister Nicholson, Mark Stevens, and Michael Willson

COVID-19 has knocked Australian sports for six, forcing the temporary suspension of professional and community fixtures. Now, as the AFL prepares to return to play, join AFL Media’s chief correspondent Damian Barrett for a webinar exploring the challenges posed by COVID-19 to covering football and other leagues.

How do you chase a story given the limits created by social distancing? What is it like to photograph or commentate a match in an empty stadium? What new challenges are ahead for sports journalism?

With three very special guests:

Alister Nicholson is a sports commentator for ABC Grandstand based in Melbourne. He has commentated a wide range of prominent sporting events including AFL grand finals, the Olympics and Test cricket.

Mark Stevens is 7NEWS Melbourne’s chief AFL reporter, and has covered the game for the Herald Sun and Triple M for more than two decades.

Michael Willson is the chief photographer for AFL Media, and has taken some of the most iconic images of the game in recent history, including his photo of Tayla Harris mid-air, which won the 2019 Gold Quill.
