Mis/disinformation and multicultural media: the council election challenge

Victorian local councils hold their elections next month. At a time of increased misinformation and disinformation, just how can voters across a range of Victorian communities get access to accurate and helpful information that supports local democracy? And what role can multicultural media play in helping local voters?

This event features the Victorian Electoral Commissioner, Sven Bluemmel, and a panel of multicultural media identities, moderated by an expert in information integrity.

It’s a not-to-be missed opportunity to highlight the crucial role multicultural media plays in shaping local decision-making.

[+] Sven Bluemmel, Victorian Electoral Commissioner;

Sven Bluemmel was appointed Electoral Commissioner in August 2023. He previously served as the inaugural Victorian Information Commissioner, Western Australian Information Commissioner and has held senior positions in the Western Australian and Commonwealth public sectors. Mr Bluemmel practised law in the private sector in Melbourne and Perth in the areas of information and privacy law. He is a fellow of Leadership Western Australia and served as President of the Institute of Public Administration in Western Australia for three years.

Mr Bluemmel holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Bachelor of Science, both from the Australian National University.

[+] Ildiko Dauda, SBS Audio Acting Head of Planning and Development; and

An experienced broadcast journalist who has worked in various editorial leadership roles at SBS and other media organisations, Ildikó is responsible for the planning and implementation of strategic business priorities and content initiatives for SBS’s Audio and Language Content Division. This involves leading multilingual and multicultural projects for diverse audiences across SBS’s remit of 60+ language services, including programs aimed at building social cohesion, preserving First Nations languages, and meeting the settlement needs of newly arrived Australians. She is also a Co-Chair of SBS’s Employee Advisory Group, SBS Multi, focussed on enhancing workplace inclusion. Motivated by curiosity, culture, connection and community, Ildikócurrently lives and works on Cammeraygal land.

[+] Fotis Kapetopolous, secretary, Independent Multicultural Media Australia. 

Fotis Kapetopoulos, with 35 years in arts and multicultural media, notably served as Neos Kosmos' English edition editor from 2007 to 2011 and from 2020 to now as the masthead’s senior journalist in English. Kapetopoulos spearheaded the Multicultural Media Australia (IMMA), which advocates for multicultural media as public interest journalism. He pursues a Ph.D. at Deakin University on Neos Kosmos' role.

[+] Moderated by Sushi Das, Associate Director of the Information Integrity Hub at RMIT University.

Sushi Das is a journalist of more than 25 years' standing, most recently working at The Age (1995-2016), where she held a series of senior reporting and editing positions, including state political reporter, news editor, columnist, feature writer and opinion editor. She is the winner of two Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards, including Best Columnist (2005).

Educated and raised in London, Sushi moved to Australia in 1991, joining newsagency Australian Associated Press as a news reporter. As a public speaker and media commentator, she has addressed topics including multiculturalism, racism and culture clash. She has been a regular columnist for SBS online, and is the author of Deranged Marriage, an east-meets-west memoir about arranged marriage.

She joined RMIT in 2017 and is now Associate Director of RMIT Information Integrity Hub.
