The Edit: Multicultural Media and COVID-19

In the midst of an industry crisis marked by dwindling revenues, widespread cuts and layoffs, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the continued importance of journalism in connecting Australian audiences to timely, accurate and comprehensive public health information as well as updates about changing government responses.

The role of multicultural media during the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly significant, speaking to diverse communities across languages and in culturally relevant ways. At our September 2020 Edit webinar, moderator Rachael Dexter talked to a special panel about the role of multicultural news in covering COVID-19, but also about the broader contribution of multicultural journalism to Australian media environments. What are the particular pleasures and challenges of reporting across languages? How can mainstream media better serve diverse communities? Featuring:

Christina Zhou, Acting Digital Editor, ABC Asia Pacific Newsroom and ABC News Diversity Advisory Group member

Fotis Kapetopoulos, head of Kape Communications and senior writer/consultant for Neos Kosmos (English edition)

Sylva Mezher, Executive Producer of SBS Arabic24 and former presenter on Good Morning Australia (SBS Arabic24)
