Nick McKenzie: telling the truth about a national hero

It was a military scandal revealed in a series of stories about the real face of the nation’s most decorated living war veteran and culminated in what’s been called the ‘Defamation Trial of the Century’.

For five years, Nick McKenzie and Chris Masters sought to tell the real story behind Ben Roberts- Smith service in Afghanistan. The SAS veteran claimed the stories defamed him but last month, the Federal Court dismissed his claim in what was a decision that affirmed the value of public interest journalism.

Nick McKenzie’s new book – Crossing the Line – takes us inside the exhausting battle to tell the truth and help deliver justice to Roberts-Smith’s victims and their families.

Join Nick, The Age’s Michael Bachelard and two of the defamation lawyers central to the landmark trial – Peter Bartlett and Dean Levitan – in a rare discussion about one of Australian journalism’s most remarkable stories.
