Masterclass: The Key Ingredients – food, wine & words

This event has concluded. Find our photo gallery below.

If it’s true that we eat with our eyes, how important are the words we use about food?

At a time when eating – whether it’s where our food comes from, or what we eat and how we cook it – has never been more topical, we’re excited to host a special event on writing about food.

In this exclusive Masterclass, we go to a two-hatted Melbourne restaurant for a panel discussion and three course meal (with wine), featuring leading Melbourne chef Victor Liong.

Victor will host the evening at his Melbourne restaurant Lee Ho Fook, which was awarded two hats in the 2024 Age Good Food Guide.

On the panel:

Hilary McNevin (moderator) worked in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years and started as a freelance food writer 20 years ago. She has contributed to a range of food publications, including Epicure The Age and goodfood.com.au, The Guardian, James Halliday magazine, Delicious, SBS Food Online, The Australian, and Broadsheet Melbourne. Hilary founded PR, marketing and events agency, Turnip Media in early 2017 for food producers, winemakers, growers, purveyors and the hospitality industry

Victor Liong, Chef and owner of Lee Ho Fook, arrived in Australia from Brunei aged six and grew up immersed in the multicultural energy of Sydney. He’s an alumnus of the kitchens at Galileo and Mr Wong, and his time at the acclaimed Marque restaurant remains a significant influence on his approach. In 2013 Victor opened his first restaurant, Lee Ho Fook, in Melbourne and two years later moved the restaurant from Collingwood to its current CBD address.

Gemima Cody is a former chief restaurant critic for The Age and Good Food. These days, according to her Instagram profile, she’s a “farmer-in-train’’.

Emily Naismith co-hosts and produces chart-topping food podcast Ingredipedia – the McDonald’s Happy Meal of the podcast world. She’s written about food and other fun, personal things for frankie magazine, the ABC, Broadsheet and The Australian. She’s also a regular guest on ABC 774 where she’s known as ‘The Food Detective’.

Nick Connellan is Broadsheet’s Australia editor. He joined as Broadsheet's first directory editor in 2015 and went on to co-host the publisher’s Around Town podcast, managed quarterly print papers in Melbourne and Sydney, and edited three hardcover books: The Broadsheet Italian Cookbook, Home Made and Travels.
